NOA secures long-term offtake from one of South Africa’s largest solar projects
NOA has entered into a long-term generation power purchase agreement (GPPA) with Anthem for renewable energy from the 475 MWac (620 MWdc) Notsi Solar Project, following the project reaching financial close.
Developed by Anthem in partnership with Reatile Renewables, the Notsi Solar Project is located in the Free State and is currently set to be the largest solar photovoltaic (PV) project in South Africa. Once operational, it will generate approximately 1,5 TWh of renewable electricity annually, contributing significant new capacity to the national grid.
Through a multi-offtaker wheeling model, power from the project will be transmitted across Eskom’s grid and supplied to commercial and industrial customers via energy traders, including NOA.
For NOA, the agreement forms part of its strategy to build a diversified portfolio of renewable generation assets and offtake partnerships that enable reliable, competitive clean energy supply to customers.
Karel Cornelissen, Group CEO of NOA, said: “Notsi represents another important step in scaling South Africa’s competitive renewable energy market. With this transaction, NOA’s diversified portfolio now approaches 1,5 GW of generation capacity in construction and development across owned assets and strategic offtake partnerships.
Projects of this scale are critical to delivering reliable, long-term clean energy to our growing portfolio of commercial and industrial customers. Our model is defined by diversified generation with disciplined aggregation and trading capability, enabling customers to access renewable energy with greater certainty and flexibility.”
The Notsi Solar Project spans more than 1,000 hectares and will comprise over 860,000 solar panels, making it one of the most significant privately developed solar facilities in the country. Construction is expected to be completed in approximately 26 months.
James Cumming, CEO of Anthem, said “Anthem developed Notsi at this immense size to provide low-cost wholesale power to the private market, whilst also ensuring it can amortise with grid upgrades that the project is building on behalf of Eskom and NTCSA. The scale and strategic relevance of Notsi epitomises the progress of solar energy wheeling in South Africa. It is a win-win for investors, offtakers and lenders, but also for South Africa, which is a fundamental driver of Anthem’s ethos”.
Once operational, the project will contribute to improving energy security while supporting the decarbonisation goals of South African businesses by enabling long-term access to renewable electricity.
For NOA, projects such as Notsi play a key role in expanding the availability of utility-scale renewable energy available through the company’s aggregation and trading platform. The agreement with Anthem further strengthens NOA’s growing portfolio of renewable energy supply arrangements that support its mission to enable South African businesses to transition to reliable, cost-competitive clean energy at scale.
